NERC Follow on fund

This is a 'proof of concept' fund to support the commercialisation of ideas arising from research funded by:

  • Natural Environment Research Council
  • Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council
  • Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council
  • Science & Technology Facilities Council

BBSRC Follow on Fund

Application deadline 24 June 2010

This funding for Proof of Concept at the very early stage of turning research outputs into a commercial proposition.

It funds work to convert an idea into a robust business plan where a route to commercialisation is clear, for example a spin-out (seed or venture finance or licensing opportunity).

Science & Technology Facilities Council - Knowledge Exchange Follow on Fund

Application deadline 4:00pm 13 April 2010

  • aims to support the commercialisation of reasearch ideas
  • provides funds to enable these ideas to be brought to a stage where commercial opportunities can be secured
  • Is supported by NERC, BBSRC, EPSRC and the Science & Technologies Facilities Council

NERC Knowledge Exchange call

Application deadline: 26 May 2010

The NERC KE Call helps enable sharing and flow of knowledge, people skills and expertise between the UK's research base and the user community (public and private organisations).  The call is fexible to meet the many types of knowledge flow.  The types of activities covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Special data management;
  • Formation of networks;
  • Emplyment of KE translators or facilitators;
  • Special publications;
  • Workshops;
  • Training for industry or the public sector;
  • Secondments, fellowships or interchanges;

South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA)- Grant for R&D

This business support initiative provides funding to help individuals and small and medium-sized business research and develop technologically innovative products and processes.

SWRDA will be looking to support and is currently supporting four types of projects:

  1. Micro projects are small scale development projects
  2. Research projects which typically involve planned research or critical investigation into the feasibility of new products or processes
  3. Development projects involve the shaping of industrial research into a plan or design
  4. Exceptional projects that will have a major effect on the performanceof UK industry

SWRDA is operating a rolling programme so that applications can be shifted at any time.

BBSRC Industrial Partnership Awards

Application deadline: Apply anytime

Science led responsive mode grants where an industrial partner contributes cash (not 'in-kind') at least 10% of the full economic cost of the project

The BBSRC funding covers the remainder of of the cost (at 80% of the FEC rate).  For example, for an Industrial Partnership Award (IPA) costed at £350k (including the element supported by industry), industry should contribute a minimum of £35k in cash, with BBSRC contributing 80% of the remaining £315k i.e. £252k

Innovative Medicines Initiative

The Innovative medicines initiative is a unique Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the pharmaceutical industry represented by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations(EFPIA) and the European Communities represented by the European Commission.  The IMI has made a funding call in 2008 based on scientific priorities which include:

Expert systems for silico toxicity prediction:

In Vivo studies often unveil side effects of drugs which cannot presently be predicted from the chemistry of the molecule.  Early in silico prediction of such cases would increase the quality of drug candidates. Projects will build up predictive expert systems for secondary pharmacology ("off-target toxicity") pediction.

South West Angel Investors Network (SWAIN)

The South West Angel and Investor Network (SWAIN) connects private investors, or 'Business Angels', with companies looking for investment. SWAIN specialises in helping small and medium sized companies to find equity finance, and assists private investors in the South West to search for investment opportunities in businesses with growth potential. SWAIN operates throughout the South West region incorporating the counties of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, former-Avon, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

The Wellcome Trust - Seeding Drug Discovery

This five year, £91 million initiative aims to develop drug-like small molecules that will be the spring board for further research and development by the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry in areas of unmet medical need.

Carbon Trust - Technology Accelerator

The Carbon Trust Technology Accelerator is a UK Environmental Transformation Fund (administered by Defra and BERR).  The prupose of this scheme is to accelerate the commercialisation of low carbon energy (including marine) and energy efficiency technologies in the UK.
