i-GPeninsula - Solutions from Science

Welcome to the i-GPeninsula project!  Why i-G?  Well, i  because we aim to deliver an integrated approach across science and business sectors and G because we aim to commercially exploit green environmental science. We are based at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, right in the heart of the south west peninsula. So there you have it - the i-GPeninsula Project. We are funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and our sponsors are the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the Environment Agency and CASIX, (the Centre for observation of Air-Sea Interactions and fluXes).

Our project will last three years and during that time we aim to:

  • Establish the i-GPeninsula Centre and develop networks
  • Enhance entrepreneurship and enterprise
  • Maximise transfer of technology and intellectual property for commercial exploitation
  • Optimise funding from business and other sources

Since its inception, i-GPeninsula has drawn up a strategy for its future work programme involving the discovery and management of knowledge assets; has established contacts with a number of regional agencies, introducing the project and its aims; has developed its brand and website.

i-GPeninsula three stage stategy is to identify knowledge assets within PML that have potential for commercial exploitation, assess the market potential of those assets and the incubation of a selected group of assets towards profitable business.

Based on analysis so far, three main areas within PML appear suitable for commercial exploitation.  These are; a) the understanding of marine carbon dynamics in the context of carbon management for climate control; b) the understanding of molecular biology of marine organisims in the context of possible products derived from genomic fuctionality; and c) the understanding of marine monitoring systems in the context of remote sensing and in situ sensors.
